Abstract

When investing in a small parts warehouse, choosing the right automation technology is a major challenge, as the selected system is a long-term investment. Both, shuttle and AS/RS systems have proven themselves successfully in practice in this context and are characterised by a number of individual advantages and disadvantages. This article presents a quantitative decision model for the selection of the automation technology best suited for the application-specific case. In the model, suitable alternatives for both system variants are generated based on defined input parameters and system requirements and evaluated with regard to essential criteria (e.g. handling performance). Based on a multi-criteria evaluation model, the warehouse alternative to be selected is output as a recommendation to be implemented.
