Abstract

Due to the progressive increase in freight traffic, the existing road network is reaching the limits of its capacity. Therefore, in addition to unimodal transport by road, alternative modes of transport must be integrated to a greater extent. By using combined freight transport, a large part of the freight transport can be shifted from road to rail. The optimization of the transshipment processes is an essential factor to guarantee an efficient transport. The objective of this paper is to develop a control system for intelligent pitch allocation for trailer/rail trans-shipment in combined freight transport to minimize crane travel times or distances when loading trailers. RFID technology is used to ensure efficient and error-free implementation of the control system. The concept of dynamic pitch allocation is implemented within a simulation model.
