Abstract

The calculation of the scooping resistance of bucket elevators is based on empirically determined para-meters. The range of validity of the used mathematical expressions is limited to certain geometrical boundary conditions. A new simulation method for coupling ma-chine models (multi body dynamic simulation, MBD) with material models (discrete element method, DEM) was developed and validated using numerous tests. In this article the method of coupled DEM-MBD simulati-on is used to analyze the scooping resistance of vertical bucket elevators for different loading types and bulk solid properties.
