Abstract

Since the introduction of assembly lines, the principles of automobile production have been maintained nearly unchanged. The underlying principle still builds on sequential synchronized production steps, even though the products have radically changed and the variance between models escalated for many manufacturers. A batch size of one is no longer a scenario among high-class automobiles, but already a reality. However, the prevailing use of fixed materials handling equipment inhibits a flexible production which adapts to the new situation. To enable a more efficient and economical production with many variants, a reconfigurable production without a clocked assembly line is needed. A new assembly and logistics platform conceived at the IFT forms the basis for this solution.
