Unaccompanied truck trailers account for a large proportion of the loading units in RoRo- traffic. These are temporarily stored on the parking spaces of the RoRo-terminals and loaded onto RoRo-ferries from terminal-owned transport vehicles. At the landward entrance to the RoRo-terminal, the arriving trailers are registered and assigned to a parking space or a parking zone. If there are inconsistencies in location information regarding the unaccompanied trailers, since a trailer has not been parked on the assigned area, this leads to elaborate search processes on the part of the Tugmaster. In addition, there may be cases in which trailers cannot be found within the available turnover time. The use of systems for determining the position of unaccompanied trailers on the terminal site would lead to the avoidance of time-consuming search processes. However, a variety of different methods and technologies exist for determining the position of objects. This paper examines and discusses different methods and technologies for determining the position of unaccompanied trailers on Ro-Ro-terminals.Downloads
