Abstract

Mistracking of the conveyor belt is one of the leading causes for the limitation in efficiency of belt conveying systems. There are numerous causes of conveyor belt mistracking, however, there is little published literature explaining the fundamental mechanics behind the problem. The typical method used to counteract conveyor belt mistracking is by turning idler stations to effectively move the conveyor belt in the opposite direction. These methods are based on the empirical experience of plant operators rather than a calculated methodology. Simulation methods to predict the conveyor belt mistracking have been limited in the past due to the size of a belt conveyor and its nonlinear deformation, where a high number of contact problems result. This paper presents findings which analyse the effect of turned idler stations and their position in relation to the lateral movement of the belt converyor. Experiments were carried out to generate a quantitative understanding of belt mistracking, where, a simulation model is proposed and briefly explained.
