Abstract

The importance of tugger trains in internal logistics has grown steadily, due to the trend towards a well-timed supply of several production sinks by a single source. A crucial criterion of quality when using tugger trains is the lowest possible consumption of space in factory or logistical site during maneuvering. This can be achieved through a maximum directional stability combined with a minimum turning radius. These parameters are significantly influenced by the steering system installed in the trailers of the tugger trains. It is therefore necessary to select an optimal steering system for the specific application and subsequently dimension its parameters of design adequately. This article describes the development of a simulation tool for analyzing and evaluating the steering systems of tugger trains based on their directional stability over the entire course of different curves. This simulation tool is designed to determine an optimal steering concept with appropriate parameters of design already in the early phase of development.
