Abstract

Manual order picking is still widespread due to heterogeneous and dynamic work content and low investment costs. On the other hand, there are high labour costs, strong fluctuation and high error rates. Simlutaneously, companies lack the ability to adapt their picking systems to current requirements without the support of the system provider. From this discrepany, it is important to use the positive skills of humans and to eliminate the negative ones with support of the picking technologies. The design of these picking technologies requires flexibility for the user. This artickle describes the development of flexibility potential in manual order picking from a company perspective and examines the influence that more flexibility in the picking system has on picking performance.
